Joe and Elaine waited anxiously at the gate in the Savannah Airport in April 2001. The last person out of the aircraft was Jorge Doctsch, their new Torcedor (Cigar Roller) and eventually, their Tabaquero (Cigar Maker).
Jorge was born in 1976 in Havanah, Cuba. His parents were both members of the communist party. His mother, with two advanced degrees, worked in the Education Department. She made $20.00 per month. His father, Jorge, served in Castro’s army in Ethiopia, and later became the Business Agent for all transportation jobs in Havana. They divorced early in Jorge’s life and ultimately, Jorge went to live in his paternal grandmother’s house.
To make money, Jorge, was introduced to various street businesses. But after his great grandmother taught him to make cigars, that became his number one source of income. He started at the age of 11 and continued until serving the mandatory two years in the Cuban army when he turned 18.
Discharged from the army, he went back to making blackmarket cigars for the tourists but working in factories when the army decided to crack down on the street vendors.
His father managed to escape to Miami with the aid of his brother and a friend. The brothers were successful in their ‘flip-this-house’ business. Jorge arranged for his son, Jorge, to escape in 1999. Jorge was 23 years old at the time.
By the time Joe and Elaine met him in 2001, he was already an accomplished Tabaquero and was perfect for Cigartainment®. Well, there was this language issue but Jorge was a quick learner, and today speaks perfect English.

From General Cigar Sales Rep to Torcedor…
Elaine Sweigart knows luxury tobacco!
Elaine and Joe have been married since 1967. She has had an outstanding career in Sales and Administration which led her to the luxury tobacco industry in 1991. General Cigar hired her to manage their mass market brands in Georgia and Tennessee.
Two years later, she was promoted to Premium Cigar Rep, the very first female in that position for any major cigar company. After leading the company in sales, she won the President’s Award and was promoted to Assistant Regional Manager for 22 states. She also hired and trained new reps who went on to very successful careers.
After leaving General Cigar in 1999, she became the National Sales Manager for Millennium Cigars. After achieving her highest goals, she decided to leave cigar sales and went into Mortgages and then, Real Estate. Of course, she was very successful in both endeavors. She came back to work with Joe, first as a Cigar Host and then, a Cigar Roller (Torcedor).
While working as a Cigar Host in Augusta during the 2012 Masters, Ingrid, Jorge’s wife and an expert Torcedor herself, taught Elaine how to apply the outside wrapper leaf to Jorge’s bunches. Because of her artistic endeavors with pottery, she had the dexterity, craftsmanship, and just the right touch to become really good.
There is a distinction between the Cuban school of finishing the wrapper and the Dominican school. It has to do with the panuelo which wraps around the shoulder, neck, and head of the cigar.
The Cuban style extends further down the shaft which means it hardly ever unwraps when you are smoking it. Elaine learned this technique so her demonstration of the art of rolling, is exactly the same as Jorge’s or Ingrid’s.
Since then, she has served as Joe’s Torcedor at incredible venues including Sea Island, Pebble Beach, Pinehurst, East Lake Golf Club, Marietta Country Club, and many others. Elaine also serves as an additional Host.
Turns out that her paternal grandmother who came to the USA from Croatia in 1911 with her son (Elaine’s father), worked as a Cigar Maker in Steelton, PA, perhaps even for General Cigar.
